Small Steps Create Big Shifts: Lessons from the Summit


We often think that to change our lives or our businesses, we need to make a massive, earth-shaking leap.

We wait for the "perfect moment" or a giant burst of inspiration. But the truth of the trail—and the truth of the ledger—is much quieter than that.


The 14,000-Foot Perspective

I remember the day I set out to hike two "Fourteeners" in a single day: Grays and Torreys Peaks. It was an 8.3-mile out-and-back trail, and the physical demand was immense.

There were moments on that incline where I was completely out of breath, my legs were heavy, and the summits felt impossibly far away. But I realized that even the smallest, most labored steps were still progress. As long as I kept moving my feet, the summit was getting closer.

We also knew that the timing of those steps mattered. We started early that morning—not because we wanted to be awake in the dark, but because we had a vision for the accomplishment. We knew that starting early was the only way to avoid the afternoon mountain weather that could have ruined all of our efforts. In business, as in hiking, diligence in the early hours protects the vision of the later hours.


The Cookie Factory Mentality

In life and business, it is easy to get stuck in what I call the "Cookie Factory."

Imagine a factory where every employee shows up daily to make the same old sugar cookies. They turn out the same number of cookies, in the same way, year after year. Many complain that their pay never increases or their passion has faded, yet they are simply repeating the same motions.

The shift happens when someone stops and asks:

  • "What if we added frosting?" * "What if we folded in chocolate chips?" * "What if we adjusted the shape to save on packaging costs?"

Those small, "out of the box" questions are the catalysts for big shifts. Often, the questions that are never asked are the ones that could have made the biggest impact. ### Questioning the "Same Old" We often stay focused on doing the things we know, afraid to question the "why" behind our actions. We settle for the sugar cookie because it’s safe. But a small change in your thoughts or a slight adjustment in your daily actions can be the difference between a stagnant business and a thriving legacy.

It takes a bit of courage to look at a system that "works fine" and ask how it could work better. It takes even more courage to realize that if you want a different result, you have to be willing to take a different step.


Changing Your World

Whether you are gasping for air at 14,000 feet or looking at a messy set of books that feels like a mountain you can’t climb, remember that the smallest movements count.
